3D S3 Research Project Substance Designer

For my research project I worked with Substance Designer and it's amazing software.  I created a PDF documenting the process and will soon upload it to my website.  The first image is of the very first material I made following Karen Stanley's roof tile tutorial.  The second image is the node map for my latest material which is the final image.

3D S3 Project 03 Final Turn In

In the few days I had this week between my last turn in I finished texturing and rendered in Marmoset!

3D S3 Project 03 Week 03 First Bake

So I finished the high res modeling and polish in Zbrush. UV'd the game res model and got the first bake in Marmoset with some basic materials laid out. There's some small artifacts that I'd like to fix before completely moving on to texturing.

3D S3 Project 03 Week 02 High Res Modeling and Articulation

This week I focused on making some decent progress with my high res modeling on the gun.  Since I was given such a high poly count I decided to model some unique parts like the magazine and articulated parts for movement.  So the gun can be cocked in engine without it showing the inside of the mesh and such.  Now that the points are articulated and the larger forms are articulated I'll be moving on to do the fine details and finishing the high res model.  I already have a low res model ready for a first bake so once the high res is done it shouldn't be too long before I have a first bake.

3D S3 Project 03 Week 1 Ruger SR9 Low Poly Block Out

So I received an art test from a company last night and began working on the gun model as a result.  I blocked out the majority of the body and began making the cuts necessary to do extrusions and such to the geo.  I may have lost some time by choosing to change to the art test but overall it'll be better in the long run for my portfolio.

3D S3 Project 03 Ruger SR9 Art Test

So originally I was working on the shroombot for the final project but I recieved an opportunity to do an art test for a company so instead I'll be modeling a 1:1 Ruger SR9 handgun from reference.

The schedule for this project will be
July 14-Proxy/Low Poly Block Out
July 21-75% high res Modeling
July 28-Finish High res,Retopo and clean up for game res model, UV, First bake and begin texturing
Aug 1- Create Substance Designer materials and Texture in Substance Painter, Render in Marmoset

3D S3 Project 03 Concept Shroombot Mk.21(ON HOLD)

For the final project I'll be doing the this Shroombot Mk.21 by Emerson Tung.  I chose this concept because of the combination of hard surface and organic modeling.  Plus he is a precious boi that deserves to be protected at all costs.
The schedule for this project will be
July 14-Proxy/Low Poly Block Out, Begin high res MODELING
July 21-Finish high res Modeling and Sculpting of the organic bits
July 28-Retopo and clean up base cage for game res model, UV, First bake
Aug 1- Create Substance Designer materials and Texture in Substance Painter, Render in Marmoset.

3D S3 Project 02 Week 4 Everything That Can Go Wrong Will

Well..... I've had issues before with software but I've never had one so devastating as the one this week.  I used 3D Coat for the majority of my texturing but when I attempted to open it to keep working on Sunday it said that our floating license expired and after trying to fix it for hours I decided to start texturing in Substance Painter as a back up.  So essentially it was one day to texture and I am mighty steamed about it.  So I will either be purchasing my own version of 3D Coat or finishing the textures in Substance Painter but either way I'm pissed.

3D S3 Project 02 Week 3 Getting a First Bake

First of all I have never been plagued with so many Zbrush crashes before! I had finished my sculpt and as an idiot I forgot to save before running a Zbrush plugin. Of course it crashes and I lose some work.  Luckily I have a decent amount of work still but a few things I'll have to redo like the red bands on the book binding and a few sections of moss.  But none the less I decided to at least retopo the work that did save since the geo won't change too dramatically once I redo those pieces.  And of course I did the UVs for the model but this time I did the bake in Marmoset to test out the software compared to Substance Painter.  I got a really CLEAN bake as a result so I would call that a success!  As for my poly count I'm sitting at a nice 26,000, As a portfolio piece I'm aiming for more detailed work so I feel that 26,000 is good for a game res model hero asset.  Below are the bake results of the game res model in Marmoset!

3D S3 Project 02 Week 2 High Poly Modeling and Sculpting

This week was all about starting the high res sculpt and high res modeling.  I wanted to complete 75%-100% of the high res model.  I'm pretty happy with how far I got I'd say i'm about 79% done with it.  The most difficult part was deciding what needed to be sculpted and what would be better off painted in 3D Coat.  But now I think I have a pretty clear idea of what to sculpt and what to paint. I did realized certain things should be modeled with actual geometry rather than a card system, like the leaves coming out of the book for example.  So I went ahead and created those first before actually beginning the sculpt.  After that it was all about diving into the sculpt!

These images below are after creating the new leaves that were to replace the cards that I originally intended.

And here are my current renders from Zbrush, as I think I'm about 79% done with the high res model now.  And I'll be finishing the rest of it on Monday.  Now that I know what should be sculpted the process should go much more quickly.

3D S3 Project 02 Proxy Modeling The Witch Doctor Tome

This week was dedicated to proxy modeling the tome and planning out the pieces that would need to be exported separately in order to make the high poly sculpting process easier.  I also dedicated this week to establishing the scale of the tome in engine.

3D S3 Project 02 Plan Witch Doctor Tome

So for this project I'll be creating this concept from Artem Priakhin.  This project will also include this semesters research project on 3D Coat and hand painted textures. I wanted to focus on a more individual asset this time. I've been doing such large projects that I haven't had much opportunity to real hone in on a single object.

This projects schedule will be pretty similar to last projects schedule.
Week 1: Proxy Block out of model.
Week 2: Finish 75%-all of the high res sculpting and modeling
Week 3: Game res model retopo and UVing, First Bake in Marmoset.
Week 4: Complete all hand painted textures and render in Marmoset.
